At Shenendehowa High School there is a major dress code topic being discussed: Flip Flops. In recent years there has been a transition between keeping your toes hidden during school hours, to the current trend of wearing flip flops loud and proud. Roaming the halls you can find numerous people with their toes on display. However, with this transition many people have scattered thoughts.
Olivia Montarello, a current junior at Shen and anti-flip flopper, feels strongly about her despise of flip flops in the school setting.
“I don’t understand why it’s currently a trend. Whoever started the flip-flop Friday thing needs to be stopped. It’s disgusting,” states Montarello. She even goes to state the only times when her feet are on display, “I will wear my Birkenstocks in the summertime on my way to the pool. Even then while I’m in the car, on the way to said pool, I will have socks on. I will take my socks off when I am about to enter the pool. Keep your feet away.”
Rachel Stotz, a current junior at Shen and open minded flip-flopper, shares her thoughts on this new trend.
“This year it is viewed as normal and more people are wearing them,” states Stotz. When asked if she would participate in the flip flop trend Stotz stated that “I might.”
Roma Advani, a current junior at Shen, gives some insight to how the “big stereotype around having your toes out” has changed.
“If you have a really good pedicure then you should have your toes out, but if your feet are disgusting and hairy, then no. We shouldn’t judge others for their decisions, but if you have ugly feet put it away,” states Advani.
Reeves Mooney, a current 10th grader at Shen, states that we should “let a girl live a little, let the toes breathe, and do whatever’s comfortable.”
However, one unanimous perspective from all of these students was that men should not have their feet out.
“Even more disgusting than a girl wearing flip flops. At least a girl may have her toes painted. Guys, they’re just gross,” states Montarello. Following this Stotz states, “Disgusting. No one wants to see that.”
