With no way home and limited resources, Grace must rely on his scientific knowledge, problem-solving skills, and determination to survive deep space and complete his mission. Along the way, Grace meets numerous obstacles and meets someone (or something…) unexpected that changes the course of his mission. It forces him to overcome language barriers and work together with them to overcome impossible odds so they can reach a common goal: to save their people.
Beyond its fast-paced plot, the film explores powerful themes such as loneliness, self-discovery, and resilience. Stranded in deep space, Ryland Grace, the main character, experiences significant personal growth as he is forced to rely entirely on himself, whilst navigating through not only the dangers around him but also his own self-doubt. However, as he progressively makes small successes (and a new friend), his confidence launches further than he believed. Despite these deeper themes, the film never loses its sense of humor. Ryland Grace, along with other characters he encounters, brings witty banter, dad jokes, and sarcasm that every film needs. It added a nice blend to the seriousness of the plot, with countless moments that make the movie genuinely funny and engaging.
Additionally, these themes are reinforced through the film’s technical elements, particularly its use of sound and cinematography. At several moments, the film cuts to complete silence, a creative choice that emphasizes the emptiness of space and intensifies how lonely space truly is. Combined with wide camera angles that emphasize the scale and distance, these moments push the audience into the main character’s experience, making the loneliness feel both visual and emotional. In contrast, sound was amped super high during high-stakes moments, creating tension and adrenaline for its viewers, similar to what Grace was experiencing. Light also had a piece in the cohesiveness of the film. Within the spacecraft, it’s dim with an eerie, depressive ambiance. However, in moments of hope, scenes were filled with warm, bright lighting to highlight the emotions in the scene. Without these elements, Project Hail Mary wouldn’t have been as outstanding of a film as it was.
