On Friday, Oct. 10 the Shenendehowa High School football team ended spirit week with a pep rally to prepare students for the homecoming game.
Arvin Shams, a senior and commentator at the pep rally, said the event exists to hype students up before the game.
“The point of the pep rally is to create a huge amount of school spirit right before the football game,” Shams said. “High amount of school spirit means a bigger turnout for the homecoming game and more hype crowds.”
The rally began with fall sports teams being called one-by-one to run through their banners, as students cheered them from the bleachers. There were also volunteers, such as Bashar Tosun, a senior, who had the job of hyping the crowd.
“My role at the pep rally was hype squad. I was there to yell at the bleachers, pass balls to the people sitting,” Tosun said.
The rally then proceeded with a series of games in which the four high school classes competed against each other, including games such as a water balloon toss, relay race, and a tug of war to finish off.
Mathew Bashualdo, a senior, said that his team did well on the water balloon toss but “didn’t have enough ‘strong’ people” for the tug of war, leading to the sophomores beating the seniors. Despite this loss, Bashualdo still enjoyed the rally.
“The pep rally felt great just because I got to play games with my friends and get super hype. I didn’t get super worried about the huge crowd behind me because I only focused on the game,” Bashualdo said.
