The Shenendehowa boys’ varsity soccer team is midway through their 2025 fall season with a record of 4-2-2 and hopes of claiming the sectional championship of Class AAA.
According to Assistant Coach Michael Tymeson, the season has been a little up and down.
“We have high expectations, but right now, we are struggling to score goals a little bit,” said Tymeson.
Although scoring remains a challenge for the team, their chemistry and strong leadership have been bright spots according to Coach Bain, driving the team to end the season strong.
Part of that leadership comes from the team’s senior captains, Gabriel Zahn and Kanny Homawoo. Their coaches emphasized how these co-captains set high expectations and serve as role models, fostering discipline and motivation among their teammates.
Not only that, the co-captains motivate each other on the field despite playing different positions.
“It’s really really nice to see Kanny work hard on the field, and that definitely drives me to work just as hard as well,” said Zahn, a center back for the soccer team.
This sense of unity and accountability among the team’s leaders has been crucial to overall team chemistry.
Head Coach Jonathan Bain said he also notices the positive energy among the team.
“It’s a really, really nice group of boys who care, and they’re all about the team and what we can do as a group,” said Bain.
He said their drive is an essential part of a championship mindset and appreciates that he rarely has to coach effort because the boys put their best foot forward every time they step on the field.
As the team continues to strengthen these bonds, they also are continuing to reflect on tough losses and spirited competition to come.
One of their biggest challenges came under the lights against Shaker, the defending sectional champions. Although Shenendehowa fell short of a win with a final score of 3-2, the coaches believe this game highlighted the team’s grit, toughness, and ability to compete under pressure.
According to Bain, this game was a defining moment for the team, demonstrating their willingness to compete with tough opponents, and the true potential they have to defeat Shaker once they face off again later this season.
“It’s a fun group to be around,” said Bain. “I think we are really close to kind of turning a corner so we’ll see what happens.”
