Last month, Shenendehowa boys soccer team had their annual Senior Night. The event recognizes the dedication of senior players and their families over the last few years.
Before the 7 p.m. kickoff each of the 12 seniors were given flowers and applause as they walked with their families across the pitch.
“It means a lot more than a soccer game. It’s a celebration of the years I’ve put into this program.” said senior captain and center back Gabe Zahn. Zahn has been with the team since his sophomore year. Making him one of the most experienced players on the roster.
Senior Night is a time of reflection for the seniors as well.
“My favorite memory is actually playing under the lights on a night like this and playing well,” said senior Shunsuke Kakita, who is missing this year with a knee injury.
After the ceremony, the team played Section II rival CBA, which ended in a 4-1 win for Shenendehowa. It marked the team’s first game this season with more than two goals.
Players said this win gave the team more confidence going into the final stretch of the season here in October.
“I think this is going to keep our momentum going and churning, and it’s going to get confidence to our players to just go and score,” said senior Goalie Thomas Strife.
