As Friday’s game approaches, senior football players and students at Shenendehowa High School have been preparing for their last Homecoming game.
For seniors it is a bittersweet experience.
“Growing up watching Homecoming from the sidelines, it is definitely a weird feeling to now be the one’s starting in the game,” stated Captain Dylan Maye.
While many returning players have played in their fair share of Homecoming games, they say the last one is the most meaningful.
“The game holds more value than others, there is a standard we are trying to live up to and as seniors we want to meet that standard. Especially for our last homecoming game,” said 3-year varsity player, Nate Heptig.
Regardless of the sentimental feelings associated with the last Homecoming game, there is also a feeling of excitement among the players and students.
“We’re all excited for the game, dressing up in Shen pride and supporting our friends. It’s always a fun time. Especially now, being behind the end zone allows us to get into the game and helps us to get a few chants going,” said senior and superfan, Jake Miller.
This is the only game where the senior student section is placed behind the endzone, and many people say it is their favorite tradition. Players have expressed that the added excitement helps players’ build energy during the game.
“The seniors behind the end zone are absolutely electric, we love having them back there to celebrate with and feed off their energy,” said Dylan Maye.
“The louder the student section the better we play,” said Nate Heptig.
