This month, Shenendehowa opened their new track and field to the public after being closed for reconstruction the previous four months. The project had been planned for the past five years.
Coordinating events around not having the track and field, tennis courts, and gymnasium 1 was “brutal” according to Chris Culnan, Director of athletics and Physical Education for Shenendehowa Central School District. Culnan said he had to juggle many sports practice schedules around this.
However the short term pain was a long term gain. Many people were pleased with the $1.5 million complex which included new turf, track and resurfaced tennis courts. According to Culnan “[the track is] beautiful couldn’t be more pleased with how it came out.”
Football Captain and center position, Colin Thompson is thrilled to have a brand new field. “It’s pretty comfy [and] feels like you’re walking on a marshmallow,” Thompson says.
Not only is Shen Varsity happy about the new field, so are the modified football players. Scott Dochat, JV football coach, says his players have been excited about being able to play on the new field for their first ever home game of the season for the past month.
“I’m excited about it and the kids are too,” says Coach Dochat.
